On Attention

To paint watercolour is to agree to be slow. The pigment moves on its own time. The paper accepts what it accepts. The hand is asked, again and again, to stop being the centre of the picture. I think of this as the practice of being a witness — to a street, to a face, to a quiet hour — without rushing it into meaning.
